なお、日本にバスケットボールを紹介したのは、大森 兵蔵（おおもり ひょうぞう、1876年3月14日 – 1913年1月13日）という元YMCA体育教授であり、彼はバレーボールを日本に初めて紹介した人物でもあるという(→http://www.gllc.or.jp/profile/history/ohmori.html)。

その後バスケットボールは、学内で人気を獲得するだけでなく、YMCA(キリスト教青年会)で共有された新競技は数年で全米に広まり、誕生から10年足らずでプロリーグが編成されるまでに伝播したという記録がある。

とどまるところを知らないバスケットボールの熱狂は瞬く間に国外に、遂には1936年のベルリンオリンピックからは正式種目として採用されるまでになる。発明者、ジェイムズ・ネイスミス博士は、存命中にその始球式に参加する名誉を受けた。
